play ball...

...nope, surprisingly I'm NOT talking about baseball (I can hear the collective sigh of relief). What a Sunday I had! I do not consider myself a basketball fan. Football, baseball, hockey...not really basketball. Although I do love March Madness, the NBA doesn't do much for me. I had an opportunity yesterday which may have helped me turn a corner. I was fortunate enough to be able to photograph a WNBA game...FUN! The Washington Mystics are the closest thing to a local team that we have here in Baltimore...and let me tell you, these women are FIERCE! They are truly amazing athletes and it got me to thinking, why is this not more of a draw? People love basketball...women love basketball. So why does women's basketball not draw the crowds that it should? Here are powerful, successful women getting paid to do something that they love. Isn't this just the kind of message we want to send to our kids? Especially our little girls? I've come to the conclusion that the main problem is coverage. They just don't have it. Until this past week, I couldn't have told you the name of the Washington team. And maybe part of the problem is that there aren't that many teams yet, so the season is pretty short (compared to the ridiculousness of the NBA season). What would get you in the seats? Celebrities? Bobblehead night? What is it that would get your attention? These women certainly deserve all of the attention they can get...phenomenal game with one new fan :)

So here are more than a few shots from yesterday's game (which they won, by the way). I quickly found out that shooting basketball is much different than baseball and football. It's fast, in your face, and unpredictable. Awesome!
