...a sea of granite serves as a tangible reminder of what Memorial Day is all about. Sure, the cookouts and swim parties are great fun, but ultimately that is not the intent of this holiday. Have you ever taken on a job because deep in your soul you know it's the right thing to do...even if it means sacrificing your life? Have you ever felt that your purpose in life is to defend the safety and liberties of the millions of people that you share this country with? I cannot answer yes to these questions. On September 11, 2001 my reaction was not to go enlist...but that is what so many people did. It's like the firefighters who run into a burning building while the rest of us are running out....the police officers who chase after a gun wielding maniac while the rest of us cower in terror. What gives a person that kind of strength to overcome fear and sometimes rational thought to put themselves in harm's way for someone else? It's an extraordinary virtue. I am beyond thankful that there are people out there who possess such strength of character and true selflessness. These people die for us. Literally. It's the harsh reality that we sometimes overlook because we're so inundated with horrific stories that are just too much to bear. But we cannot forget about these people and their sacrifices. Every piece of granite beautifully etched with a name and dates has a story...has a family, friends, brothers in arms who mourn for them not just daily, but every waking moment. For those that we've lost there is unfathomable grief...for those that are currently deployed, there is constant worry and loneliness.
Take a moment today to think about Memorial Day. Send loving thoughts to those that grieve. Send strength to those who are deployed and their loved ones who anxiously wait at home for their safe return. Enjoy the day but realize why you are able to sit back and relax...it is a luxury that is not guaranteed...it is fought for every single day.
On a personal note...thank you to my husband...our soldier
